Vice Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria and Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has emerged winner of February 25, 2023, senatorial election for the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The result was declared on Monday at the Uyo Zonal Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the Returning Officer, Prof. E. B. Usoro.

Rt. Hon. Bassey polled 98,634 votes to defeat Mr. Emaeyak Ukpong of the All Progressive Congress (APC), 43,204 votes and Barrister Usenobong Akpabio of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), 37,679 votes, who contested against him.

The Senator-Elect, in a statement of gratitude said “My eternal gratitude goes out to the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel; the State PDP Structure and Stakeholders of the party across Uyo, Itu, Uruan, Ibiono Ibom, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ubium, Nsit Ibom, and Ibesikpo Asutan for their support and confidence reposed in me. I am standing shoulder-tall today because you all made me a victor. This reality would not have been but for your collective votes at the polls. For this, I say thank you.”

Speaking further, the Senator-Elect for the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District seat, said “The victory of February 25, 2023, will remain indelible in our hearts and on the sands of time. The victory has brought a new vista of hope and prosperity to the district. Indeed, it is the victory of the people as ordained by the Almighty God. I completely dedicate this victory to God and the people of Uyo Senatorial District and Akwa Ibom.”

“As I launch myself into this all-productive journey to bridge and redefine representation, empowerment and human capacity development, I reaffirm my dedication and commitment to my campaign promises. And together, we will ensure the enviable prosperity of Uyo Senatorial District and Akwa Ibom State. I wish to also reassure our youths, rural women, indigent students and the vulnerable that our celebration of initiative, enterprise and scholarship through my pet project, the RHAB-YESS Foundation, will be boundless and bigger,” he maintained.

He further appealed to the people of Akwa Ibom to extend the same show of love, support and solidarity to the Gubernatorial Candidate of the PDP, Pastor Umo Eno, and all the State House of Assembly Candidates of the party in the forthcoming elections.

Rt. Hon. Bassey, an alumnus of the University of Uyo, has a B.Sc in Chemistry, a B.Sc in Sociology and Anthropology, two Master Degrees in Social and Cultural Anthropology, and in Development Studies. He is currently pursuing two Doctorate degrees in the same University. He has several requisite Certificates from Harvard Law School, Harvard University Extension School, Emory University, Northern America University and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Academy in Astralia.
