Following torrential rainfall that caused flooding in parts of the state, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Obong Prince Ikim, on Saturday visited Oron Local Government Area to assess the impact of the flooding.

Obong Ikim, who was received by the Chairman of Oron Local Government Council, Hon. Okon Asukwo Enweme, expressed the state government’s concern over the flooding.

He assured residents of government’s prompt intervention in the affected areas, adding that Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, is committed to addressing environmental challenges and is not merely paying lip service to environmental concerns.

The Agency’s Chairman expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of some road construction projects, noting that durable road infrastructure should be complemented by adequate drainage systems to channel floodwater effectively.

Deeply concerned by the severity of the flooding depicted in videos circulating online, Obong Ikim inspected several of the affected communities.

The areas inspected included Orman Esin Street, Skypoint by the Secretariat, Ukpong Street, Effiong Essang Street, Estate Road, College Road, Academy Road, Abestonic Link to Customs, and Agric Lane.

Other locations visited included Mary Hanney, Isangedighi by Stadium Road, Lawrence Etim Street, Anwana Abia, Eyo Akan, Civic Centre, Stream Road, Bako Street, and the Oron Road axis near Access Bank and Mt. Zion Lighthouse.

The inspection formed part of the intervention efforts of the Akwa Ibom State Emergency Management Agency, coordinated by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, PhD, to mitigate the effects of the natural disaster.

Speaking shortly after the inspection, the Oron Council Chairman commended Obong Ikim for the visit and expressed confidence that the affected communities would receive the necessary government intervention.

Those who joined the Council Boss to receive Obong Ikim on the inspection included the Vice Chairman, Princess Nse Owobiak, the Council Secretary, Engr. Asuquo Asuquo, and other officials.
