Governor Umo Eno has called upon local governance and traditional leaders to rally behind the Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine (HPVV) Campaign, marking a giant stride in Akwa Ibom State’s healthcare initiatives. The appeal was made during a recent flag-off ceremony for the integration of the HPVV into routine immunization programs at primary healthcare centers, signaling a new era in the state’s fight against cervical cancer.

This event took place at Etoi Secondary School in Uyo where Governor Eno was represented by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi. She emphasized the critical nature of the campaign to safeguard young girls against the fourth most common cancer in women. Citing startling statistics from the WHO, with 570,000 women diagnosed and about 311,000 deaths in 2018 alone, Eno’s message was clear: “this vaccine is a vital shield against a prevalent killer”.

The Governor extolled the efforts of UNICEF, Clinton Health Access Initiatives, and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, underlining the importance of leveraging public schools, religious institutions, and paramilitary formations for accessible and comprehensive vaccine coverage.

Parents and caregivers received a vital message towards present aged 9-14 for immunization because “prevention is better than cure.” Eno’s vision extends beyond immediate protection, aspiring for a future of robust health for all citizens, facilitated by the active participation of grassroots leaders.

The First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, through the Health Commissioner, Professor Vincent Umoh, affirmed the government’s commitment to the health of its populace, especially the girl-child, ensuring the vaccine’s safety and efficacy.

The initiative received a chorus of endorsements, including Dr. Eno Attah, Executive Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, who urged parents to seize this opportunity for their children’s health. The campaign also garnered support from Ntenyin Solomon Etuk, head of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council, and Uyo’s local government Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, who echoed the initiative’s significance.

This campaign marks that there is hope, not just in preventing a disease but in forging a path toward a healthier, more vibrant future for the girl-child in Akwa Ibom State.
