Lott Carey Baptist Secondary School’s Access Road, Classrooms and Roof on the Verge of Collapse

The deplorable state of Lott Carey Baptist Secondary School, Afaha Obio Eno, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom, is a stark reminder of the neglect and decay that plagues many of our educational institutions.
The only access road to Lott Carey secondary school
Founded in 1957, this once-sort-after citadel of learning has been left to crumble, posing a significant threat to the safety and well-being of its over 400 students and the community .
The school’s only access road is marred by gully erosion, making it nearly impassable. The surrounding communities of Ntak Inyang, Atai Ibiaku Itam in Itu Local Government Area, and others are also affected, as the lack of a link road hinders economic growth and social interaction.
Dilapidated classroom block
A recent advocacy visit by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Akwa Ibom State council on 26th November 2024, as part of the 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence, revealed the harsh reality of the school’s condition.
The team was forced to navigate the dusty, dilapidated road on motorcycles, dodging gully erosion and other hazards.

Upon arrival, the signs of neglect were evident, crumbling walls, broken windows, and a leaking roof. Students were seen sitting on the floor to write exams, while reptiles and weeds had taken over the entrance. The once-vibrant school block had faded, and the entire structure needs renovation.
Despite these challenges, the school still manages to provide qualitative education to its students. However, the situation is dire, and immediate attention is required to prevent disaster.

With a concerted effort, Lott Carey Baptist Secondary School and the adjacent St. Joseph Primary School, which shares the same access road, could be restored to their former glory.

This would not only boost the morale of the students but also stimulate local economic growth in Afaha Obio Eno, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. It’s time for the state government to take action and address the plight of Lott Carey Baptist Secondary School. The students, teachers, and entire community deserve better.
