…Celebrates 2025 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has promised to expand humanitarian concerns, enhance capacity-building and strengthen emergency response systems across all local government areas in the State, as he commemorates the 2025 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
Speaking at the 2025 World Red Cross And Red Crescent Day, which took place on Thursday, May 8, at the Women Development Centre, Uyo, Governor Eno praised the organization for its tireless work in championing humanitarian causes, particularly through the leadership of the State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Samuel Ikon.

Represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, the Governor stated that the values of the Red Cross resonates deeply with his administration’s ARISE Agenda, which seeks to uplift the most vulnerable in the society, while outlining the several impactful interventions undertaken by his government.
Highlighting the enduring legacy of Henry Dunant, Founder of the Red Cross Movement, Governor Eno saluted the dedication of millions of volunteers worldwide, who embody compassion and selflessness amid today’s global challenges, from conflict and disaster to displacement and poverty.
“In moments of crisis, we have responded with swift humanitarian interventions. Governance must be felt where it matters most: in the hearts and homes of our people.
“As a Patron of this great organization, I am happy to be with you today, the welfare of our people, especially the most vulnerable and the neediest, is central to our governance agenda, and it is great to know that we have a partner in this organization.” he added.
With the global theme, ‘On the Side of Humanity,’ the Governor noted that the commemoration serves not only as a celebration but as a renewed call to action, urging citizens to reaffirm their commitment to compassion, solidarity, and unwavering support for humanity.
Earlier, the Akwa Ibom Branch Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, who is also the Zonal Chairman, South-South, Rt. Hon Samuel Ikon, explained that the Mission of the Red Cross is to alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable, including those affected with disaster, armed conflicts, epidermis, and poorest communities in both urban and rural areas.

He stated that World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, observed annually on May 8, honours volunteers who selflessly serve others and uphold human dignity, adding that the occasion was to raise awareness on the organization’s ongoing humanitarian efforts.
The 2025 theme, he noted, underscores the movement’s steadfast commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and promoting compassion and humanity worldwide.
Delivering a keynote address on the theme, ‘Contextualizing the Red Cross in the ARISE Agenda,’ Prof. Effiong Johnson, encouraged the Red Cross Society to align its strengths with specific priority areas within the ARISE blueprint and concentrate its efforts for greater effectiveness and impact.
The event featured the presentation of Humanitarian Awards and recognitions to Corporate bodies, individuals, and long-serving contributors.
Other highlights included the cutting of the anniversary cake, goodwill messages from development partners, and a vibrant cultural performance.
The celebration was graced by several distinguished guests, including the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Rt. Hon. Inibehe Silas, represented by Mrs. Dorothy Essang, Bishop Ahaziah Umanah; the Paramount Ruler of Uyo, HRM Sylvanus Okon, represented by Elder Ubong Marcel, the Executive Chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Edidiong Inyang, Vice Chairman, Ibesikpo Asutan, Hon. Goodness Obot, and a representative of the World Health Organization, Dr. Olaole Oluwabukola.
Other frontline partners in attendance were, ECWES, UNHCR, GIFA, NEMA, various NGOs, security agencies, students, and other stakeholders.
