…As 2024 WIFA Football League Begins

The Executive Chairman of Itu Local Government Council; Hon. Ubong Wilson Nkutt has disclosed his administration’s readiness to partner with groups and individuals to fast track football and other sports development in Itu Local Government Area.

 He made the disclosure on Sunday at QIC Primary School, Nung Ukot Itam; shortly after performing the fomal kick-off of the 2024 West Itam Football Association (WIFA) league.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Nkutt who commeded the organizers for putting together this year’s edition which is the 35th edition, described sports as a powerful unifying force that transcends social, political, and cultural divides, noting that the league would bring visibility to Itu’s budding football talents, potentially opening doors to professional careers for many young players.

He emphasized the importance of initiatives like the league in fostering peace, unity, and community spirit, adding that the tourney is also a platform to discover and nurture talents while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to promoting youth development and creating platforms for excellence in Itu Local Government Area.

In an interview wih newsmen shortly after an exhibition match tagged “The Legends Football Match” – The Deputy Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and Captain of ‘Team KufreAbasi Edidem;; Rt. Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem tasked WIFA and the Local Organising Committee to ensure only certified referrees officiate matches. This he said would ensure unbiased officiating throughout the tournament, while urging all participating teams to play according to the rules.

Similarly, the immediate past member representing Itu State Constituency and Captain of Team Idongesit Ituen; Hon. Prince Idongesit Ituen said this years competition is going to be spectacular, adding that they hope to use the tournament to support and expose football talents. A position that was corroborated by the President WIFA; Mr. Patrick Jackson who said the 35th edition of the annual event promises to be the best thus far.

Meanwhile, the MD/CEO of Treasure Island; Mr. John Nta has emphasized that football competions like the WIFA league would help foster unity in West Itam and Itu Local Government at large. He applauded the organizers for putting together the 2024 league and commendef Hon. Edidem and Hon. Ituen as well as other illustrious sons amd daughters for their continued support for sports development in the area and promised to sustain his support for sport development in the area and beyond.

The exhibition match to mark the commencement of the 2024 WIFA league ended with Team KufreAbasi Edidem pipping Team Idongesit Ituen 2 goals to nil with goals from Hon. Etim Effiong and Mr. Ekong Uyire who scored in the first and second half respectively.; setting the tone for what promises to be a thrilling football season.

As the West Itam Football Association League progresses, all eyes will be on the young talents ready to shine and make their mark. The league will feature teams from across West Itam, showcasing local talent in a competitive yet friendly environment.
