Former students of St. Mary’s Science College (SMASCO), Ediene Abak, in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have donated 95 textbooks worth more than ₦500,000 to the school’s library and unveiled an academic awards programme aimed at encouraging excellence among students.

The donation was made by the Class of 1994 Alumni Association during a ceremony attended by the principal, teachers, students, the group’s president, Dr. Anietie Ekong, and Welfare Officer II, Mr. Peter Tom.

Leading the delegation, the president of the class, Dr. Ekong, said the initiative reflected the alumni’s commitment to supporting the institution that helped shape their academic and professional journeys.

The donated books cover key secondary school subjects, including Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, and other disciplines. According to the association, the materials were carefully selected to strengthen classroom learning, support examination preparation, and improve access to quality educational resources.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the school, the principal described the gesture as a significant contribution to the development of the institution’s library and learning environment. He noted that access to updated educational materials remains critical to improving academic performance and fostering a culture of reading among students.

In addition to the book donation, Dr. Ekong announced a personal academic reward scheme designed to recognize and encourage outstanding academic achievement.

Under the programme, the best graduating SS3 student in the 2026 and 2027 academic sessions will receive a cash award of ₦100,000 each. The highest-performing graduating students in SS1 and SS2 during the same period will also receive ₦50,000 each.

Dr. Ekong said the initiative was intended to inspire students to strive for excellence and reinforce the values of hard work, discipline, and academic dedication.

“The future of our society depends largely on the quality of education we provide today. By investing in these students, we are investing in future leaders, professionals, and innovators who will contribute positively to our communities and our nation,” he said.

The alumni class president stated that the project was financed through contributions from members across Nigeria and the diaspora. Beyond financial support, members donated books, coordinated logistics, and provided other resources that contributed to the success of the initiative.

The latest intervention builds on the association’s long-standing support for its alma mater. Four years ago, the Class of 1994 Alumni Association undertook the renovation of the school’s staff room, providing a more conducive working environment for teachers and administrative personnel. Alumni members said the project reflected their belief that improving educational outcomes requires investment in both learning resources and school infrastructure.

Association officials expressed gratitude to all members whose contributions made the project possible, describing the donation as a testament to the enduring bond between former students and their alma mater.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting future projects focused on education, mentorship, and student development.

Across Nigeria, alumni associations have increasingly played an important role in complementing government efforts to improve educational standards. Their contributions often include scholarships, infrastructure development, library enhancement projects, and other interventions aimed at improving learning outcomes.

For students of St. Mary’s Science College, the donation represents more than additional books on library shelves. It is a tangible demonstration that former students remain invested in their success and are committed to creating opportunities for future generations.

Established as one of Akwa Ibom State’s leading science-based secondary schools, St. Mary’s Science College has produced graduates who have distinguished themselves in medicine, engineering, academia, business, public service, and other fields. The latest intervention by the Class of 1994 Alumni Association adds to a growing tradition of alumni-led initiatives designed to preserve the school’s legacy of academic excellence while helping prepare students for the future.
